If there is a film that has made waves in the recent past, it is undoubtedly Prabha’s lead actor Adipurush. The film is based on the Indian epic Ramayana and is directed by Om Raut of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. Kriti Sanon played the role of Sita while Bollywood star hero Saif Ali Khan played the role of the demon king Ravanasura. T-Series and Retrophiles supported this masterpiece. Amidst unprecedented hype and fan frenzy, Adipurush hits the screens today. Let’s see if the movie lives up to the hype.

Story:

Adipurush carries out war scandal in Ramayana. The film begins with Lord Rama, also known as Raghava (Prabhas), who is banished from his kingdom of Ayodhya for 14 years on the orders of his father Dasaratha. It is Kaikeyi, Bharata’s mother and Dasharatha’s younger wife, who demands that Lord Rama be sent to the forest so that her son can be crowned. Sita alias Janaki (Kriti Sanon) and Shesh alias Lakshman (Sunny Singh) accompany Lord Rama in exile. One day, the demon king Ravana (Saif Ali Khan) kidnaps Sita by distracting Rama and Sheshu with a magical deer. Later, Rama meets Hanuman (Devdutt Naga), and the rest of the movie is about how Lord Rama conquered Ravana and brought back Sita.

Plus Points:

Very few actors in the current generation can play mythological or periodic roles with ease and conviction, and Prabhas is one of them. The actor has unparalleled looks and royalty, and Adipurush couldn’t have been better had another actor played the role of Lord Shri Ram. The pan-Indian star kills everyone with his charisma, body language and dialogues, and he fits perfectly as Lord Ram. The way he delivers long dialogues and his presence on screen is irresistible.

Another good thing that happened to Adipurush is Saif Ali Khan. It was a tough task for the team to cast an actor who could match Prabhas, and they really did a great job casting Saif Ali Khan. Star actor Lankesh makes the movie even brighter with his incredible performance as Ravanasura. Saif Ali Khan does it to perfection and also scores brownie points.

Sita’s character is definitely challenging for someone like Kriti Sanon, who has played mostly glamorous roles in her career, but boy, is she perfect as Janaki, aka Sita. Kriti’s divine gaze and her mature performance add depth to the film’s action. Marathi actor Devdutt Nage breathed life in the role of Lord Hanuman. Sunny Singh, Vatsal Seth and Sonal Chauhan pass by.

Om Raut’s strength lies in showing the drama, and he handled it very neatly in the first half. The first hour features several well-executed scenes, including the Jatayu-Ravana battle, Hanuman meeting Rama for the first time, a confrontation between Sugriva and Bali, and Hanuman setting fire to Lanka. These aspects are something very familiar to the public, but the way Om Raut has presented them is interesting. The songs of the Ajay-Atul duo are fantastic to say the least and the background score elevates the film in many areas.

Minus points:

Where the first half was quite exciting, the second half couldn’t keep up the momentum. It starts out boring as the procedure shown here looks boring. The final battle takes up the lion’s share of the screen time and becomes quite a watch after a while. As an improvement, the editing team should have shortened the length by 10 minutes.

Unfortunately, all the concerns about VFX have come true. The teaser received rave reviews from everyone, which is why the team worked long hours on the VFX works. But the final result is unsatisfactory in this respect. The visual effects are shoddy for a film with a budget of 500 crore.

Another shortcoming of Adipurush is that it is mostly shot in Hindi. Usually we see the actors speak Hindi dialogues, and it is definitely a big disappointment because the makers said it is Telugu-Hindi bilingual. Because of this problem, the effect was sometimes reduced. The appearance of Ravanasura, the way the world of Lanka is designed, may not be well received by many. The makers have taken some cinematic liberties and some scenes look exaggerated.

technical aspects:

Telugu dialogues written by Bhima Srinivas are good. The Telugu lyrics written by Ramajogayya Sastry go well with the music composed by Ajay-Atul duo. The songs Shivoham and Jai Shri Ram stand out and certainly give you goosebumps. The background score of Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara is fantastic.

The costumes designed by Nachiket Barve add a modern touch to the film. Priya Suhas and Nishant Jogdand’s production design may get mixed reactions as the Lankan world is shown in a different way. The 3D effect is good in some scenes.

The makers did their best and spent a lot of money on the film, but the film disappoints in terms of VFX. Karthik Palani’s cinematography is neat. The movie needs some serious editing, especially as far as the second half is concerned. The choreography of the action sets is generic and unexciting.

Speaking of director Om Raut, he did a good job with the film. Things are going well in the first half, but they should have paid more attention in the second half. In his first Hindi film Tanhaji, Om Raut focused more on emotions, but here there was more focus on special effects. A better second half could have made Adipurush a great performance.

Decision:

All in all, Adipurush is a modern version of Ramayana that mainly benefits from the performances of Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan and Devdutt Nage. The first half of the movie is decent and the second half is below average. The background score and songs work, and they make up for the sloppy VFX work. Despite the well-known story, Om Raut managed to inspire some good moments. The film’s box office prospects will depend on how the family audience receives this updated version of the Indian epic. If you can ignore the sluggish second half, Adipurush is a good watch this weekend.
